Pakistan forces gain success against militants in northwest: army
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, May 1, IRNA - Pakistani security forces on Thursday cleared several areas of Taliban-linked militants in the northwestern Buner district, where they had faced stiff resistance Wednesday, the army said.
Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told a news conference that 14 more militants have been killed during the last 24 hours.
He did not say anything about casualties on part of the security forces.
The spokesman said that the militants still control several areas in Buner, where the security forces launched a major offensive against the militants on Tuesday.
Athar Abbas said that the forces secured Dagger, the district headquarters of Buner from the militants and also took control of a strategic pass ‘Mallandri Pass’, where Taliban had been resisting the forces over the past three days.
“The operation was resumed at six this morning and is progressing well. Suspected Taliban hideouts are being engaged with all available resources,” he said.
He said last night the miscreants attacked a security force check post and the soldiers engaged them and four militants were killed while ten soldiers were injured.
“Forces have secured eight to ten kilometers area around Daggar to increase parameters of security,’ he said, adding that the forces established a headquarters at Daggar.
Security forces are also confronting a lot of improvised explosive devices along the routes, he said.
He said according to the Inspector General, Frontier Corps, there have been huge casualties of the militants in the operation.
"They are counting the bodies but the figures could not be ascertained".
