Pakistan-President-Militancy
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has said that the fight against militants and insurgents cannot be left alone to the military and security agencies but will have to be taken over and its ownership assumed by the civilian and elected political leadership of the country.
"The political and civilian leadership in the past has successfully confronted militancy in parts of the country and, drawing lessons from that experience, is determined to carry out the ongoing fight against militancy to logical conclusion," he said.
The president was presiding over a high level meeting in the Presidency today that took stock of the situation in tribal regions and Frontier province amid the ongoing drive against militants.
He said that similar meetings will be held every month to closely monitor the progress made and the difficulties encountered.
He said that the government had placed the issue before the joint session of the Parliament to effectively give its ownership to the elected representatives of the people across the political divide.
Similar briefings had been held by the military leadership and also by the intelligence agencies in the past he said. However, the government wanted to enlarge the consultative process by inviting to this meeting the representatives from tribal, provincial government to ascertain the views of relevant political leaders and the civilian provincial government.
He said that the struggle against militancy was part of a larger struggle for saving the country, the federation and its federal and democratic structure.
"That is why the government had embarked on the three Ds strategy involving Dialogue, Development and Deterrence to root out the menace.
"This is a total fight which has to be fought not just on one front but on many fronts and in totality," the president said.
