Shia, Sunni elders ink peace deal in Pakistan

Islamabad, Oct. 16,IRNA -- Shia and Sunni elders Thursday signed a peace deal to end fighting in a Pakistani tribal region, a tribal elder said. Elders from Kurrum Agency signed the agreement after extensive talks in Islamabad over the past few days and inked the agreement in Murree, a scenic town some 50 kilometers northwest of Islamabad.
Hundreds of people from both sides have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced due to fighting in recent months.
Both rival sides will vacate and hand over to security forces bunkers in their respective areas, according to the peace agreement.
Around 700 hundred displaced families will be allowed to return to their homes, the agreement said.
Main road between Kurrum Agency and Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province, will be re-opened from Friday for traffic. The security forces will be responsible for the security of the road.
The jirga or council decided that a fine of 20 million will be imposed on those who will violate the agreement.
Next meeting will be held in Kurrum agency on November 2nd to review implementation of the agreement.
The government had failed to end fighting in Kurrum Agency and sectarian violence had caused suffering for the people in the area.
