Pakistan-Parliament

President Asif Ali Zardari has summoned the joint Parliament session to meet on October 8 to brief the parliamentarians about the military offensive against the militants.

Intelligence chiefs and army officials will brief the MPs 'in camera' about the army's operations against the Taliban-linked militants in the tribal region and Swat valley in the northwest.

The opposition parties had been demanding the government to explain about the continuation of army offensives as the same was launched during the government of former President Pervez Musharraf.

Major opposition Muslim League-N group of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif demands disclosure of secret agreements signed during Musharraf's period.

Former Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri said last week that Musharraf's government had allowed the U.S to carry out limited operations in Pakistan.

Opposition parties are critical of the use of force in the tribal regions and insist that the problem should be resolved through dialogue.

The government will in the joint session of the parliament will argue as to why the operation is continuing.

The Government says that foreign hand is behind the wave of suicide attacks and bomb blasts across the country and will give details in the joint session.

The decision to hold joint sitting of the parliament was taken after a meeting chaired by President Asif Ali Zardai and attended by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and army chief General Pervaiz Ashfaq Kayani.
