Pakistan army chief visits violence-hit tribal region as shelling continues

Pakistan army chief visited a tribal region on Sunday where the security forces continued shelling of positions of suspected militants, an army statement said.

Officials said that fighter planes and artillery bombed positions of the militants in different areas, killing at least five of them.

"On return from China's visit, Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, visited Bajaur, to meet commanders and troops engaged in the ongoing operations," a statement from the army's public relations department said.

The army chief also met with local tribesmen of the area, it said.

The Chief of Army Staff was given detailed briefing by Major General Tariq, Inspector General, Frontier Corps on the progress of operations.

General Kayani, expressed his satisfaction that local tribesmen have risen against miscreants and are fully supporting the Army.

He reiterated that success in this operation was directly linked with popular support.

Chief of Army Staff remained with troops for a considerable period of time and had informal interaction with local commanders. He appreciated the high morale of officers and men alike.

In charge of the operation in Bajaur, Major General Tariq told journalists that over 800 militants have been killed in the operation in a month.

Five senior commanders of the militants were among those killed in the operation.

He said that up-to 30 soldiers have also been killed and around 100 injured.
