Pakistan-Musharraf

Pakistani Presidential spokesman Rashid Qureshi on Friday ruled out the possibility of resignation of Pervez Musharraf from the office to avoid the proposed impeachment against him.

Earlier, media had reported that President Pervez Musharraf has decided to resign instead of facing his impeachment in the Parliament.

The ruling coalition has decided to impeach Musharraf for alleged misconduct, violation of Constitution and financial irregularities.

Rashid Qureshi criticised the media for speculating about Musharraf's resignation, saying that such reports are baseless.

The president in a meeting with the PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujat Hussain and opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has also said that he would not resign on the occasion as he was elected by the Parliament for five years and would continue to play his constitutional role for the country.

President Pervez Musharraf accused Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif of creating political instability in the country and said he would face the impeachment motion of the ruling coalition.

Musharraf has also urged all segments of society to shun confrontations and adopt a reconciliatory approach.

Pressure is mounting on Musharraf to resign as provincial assemblies have also expressed their desire to seek vote of no confidence.

Pakistan army Chief General Kayani has not commented on the political situation of the country but a newspaper reported him as telling Musharraf he did not want to get dragged in to the controversy.

Musharraf became unpopular after he declared emergency rule across Pakistan on November 3, 2007.

He suspended the Constitution, imposed State of Emergency, and fired the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

It is the first time in the history of Pakistan that impeachment proceedings have been launched against a President.

As president, Musharraf could dissolve the National Assembly and provincial assemblies but assemblies are dissolved with the consent of the army and the present army is not supporting the dissolution of the assemblies.
