Musharraf decides to resign: daily

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Aug 15, IRNA Pakistan-Musharraf

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has finally made up his mind to quit instead of facing his impeachment in parliament, a local daily reported on Friday.

Citing sources close to the president, The News daily reported that Musharraf indicated to his aides late Wednesday "he would be the last person to create any adverse situation for the system as the country."

"Musharraf conceded the fact that he could not carry on with the incumbent government and any effort to prolong the prevailing situation could harm the national interests further," it said.

"He has realised that despite his services the level of his acceptance has become negligible. In the circumstances he is working on his exit strategy," the daily reported.

"Pervez Musharraf would be allowed to return to the country at any time if he decided to proceed abroad soon after quitting," the sources said.

The paper said the President has discarded the idea to enter into any constitutional battle with his adversaries.

British daily The Financial Times also reported that President Musharraf will resign in few days after nine years in office.

Quoting government officials and a member of his circle the Financial Times reported that Musharraf had decided to step down to avoid a parliamentary impeachment that was likely to begin on Monday.

Presidential spokesman Rashid Qureshi has denied such reports in the past.

"The president will neither be impeached nor prosecuted on any charges. He will try and stay in Pakistan," said the official.

Politicians from Pakistan's coalition government promised last week to seek a parliamentary vote to impeach Mr Musharraf, and are preparing a charge sheet to lay down the accusations against him formally.
