Pakistan-Arrests

Pakistani security forces have arrested eight members of banned extremist groups and seized four suicide jackets, the police chief said Friday.

The suspects were planning to kidnap important personalities for ransom and also to get freed their under colleague, who is facing terrorism charges, police chief Pervez Rathor said.

They were also planning to kill a police officer in the city of Sargodha in Punjab, who is in charge of investigation into bomb attacks on security forces in the city, Rathor told a news conference.

The police officer said that the suspects are being questioned about their activities in the country and links with other militants.

He said that the arrested men had planned to kidnap important personalities to get more money as ransom and to provide the money to their groups.

The police did not say which groups they belong to.

Rathor said that the arrested men are in the age between 20 to 25 years.

He said that the suspects were also planning to deliver suicide jackets to the would-be bombers.

"But the plan was frustrated," he added.

The police chief said that the arrests were made possible with the coordination of other security agencies.
