Landmine blast injures eight Pakistani soldier

A landmine blast hit a convoy on Pakistani troops in the country's tribal region on Monday and injured eight soldiers, officials said.

The injured were taken in a helicopter to a military hospital in Bannu, a major city at the edge of the tribal region of North Waziristan.

Local authorities in Wana, the center of South Waziristan, said that a landmine exploded near an army convoy and hit a vehicle at Tanai area at 5 p.m.

The convoy was heading to Wana from Tank, a city near South Waziristan, local administration said. It said that the vehicle was totally destroyed, locals said.

The army blocked the main road for traffic between Wana and Tank after the blast, locals said Officials said that the authorities had tightened security on the main road and army was also deployed to protect the convoy.

Areas between Wana and Tank are controlled by a pro-government Taliban leader Mulla Nazir but he was unhappy over a last month missile strike at Azam Warsak area, which killed seven people.

Mulla Nazir, who is against Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsood, said that all those killed were innocent students and their teacher.

Al-Qaeda said yesterday that a senior leader was killed in a recent attack, and Pakistani media and said that the leader was killed in the same attack.
