Musharraf says ex-PM Sharif can return to Pakistan

President General Pervez Musharraf has said that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif can return home.

He was speaking to a representative gathering at the second programme of "Aiwan-e-Sadr say" (from president house) entitled "Jamhooriat, Siasat aur Elections" (democracy, politics) in Islamabad last night.

President Musharraf said that Mr Sharif had gone into exile on his own choice as he was begging for forgiveness of his jail term.

He said that Mr Sharif was convicted by the courts and later he approached a friendly for his exile.

General Musharraf said that Mr Sharif is the head of a political party and can lead his party but he said run up to the elections should be smooth and there should be no political destabilization in the country.

General Musharraf said political reconciliation and national consensus on issues confronting the country is the need of the hour.

President Musharraf said the ongoing dialogue with the opposition parties is aimed at achieving the objective of reaching political reconciliation and national consensus.

He said there is dialogue going on as what is required is political stability, political reconciliation and national consensus on issues confronting Pakistan and this need of the hour.

About the Presidential elections he said it is the constitutional requirement that these should be held between 15th of September and 15th of October this year.

He said there is no constitutional bar for his election by the present assemblies.

To a question about his military uniform, President Musharraf said he would follow the constitution and the law of the country.

He said though the president should not be in uniform but the parliament allowed him to remain president in uniform till the end of 2007 with a two third majority as the country was facing serious threats and dangerous after 9/11.
