Pakistan army backs Musharraf in judicial crisis

Islamabad, June 1,IRNA - Senior army commanders in a meeting on Saturday threw weight behind President General Musharraf in the present judicial crisis and condemned those who have launched anti-Musharraf campaign.

A conference of the Corps Commanders and Principal Staff Officers of the Pakistan Army on Friday 'took serious note of the malicious campaign against Institutions of State, launched by vested interests and opportunists, an army statement said.

The conference was convened in view of the judicial crisis, began in the country after the President sacked the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on the charges of abuse of authority, the charges he denied.

Mr Chaudhry's sacking has sparked country-wide protests from lawyers and opposition parties, which analysts say has posed serious challenge to President Musharraf in his eight year of rule.

The army statement said that some elements are acting as obstructionist forces to serve their personal interests and agenda even at the cost of flouting the rule of law.

The Corps Commanders and Principal Staff Officers of the Pakistan Army affirmed to stand committed for the security of their country under the leadership and guidance of the President and the Chief of Army Staff, the statement said.
