Pakistan has set up a body in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote the objective of nuclear non-proliferation, the Foreign Office spokesperson said on Monday.

The Strategic Export Control Division (SECDIV) will formula and enforce laws, rules and regulations for implementation of export controls in accordance with the country's Export Control Act and also serve as licensing body, Tasnim Aslam told weekly briefing.

She said that the establishment of SECDIV is a continuing manifestation of Pakistan's strong commitment to non-proliferation and its determination to fulfill its national and international export control commitments.

Pakistan has already notified a Control List of goods, technologies, materials and equipment that incorporate the internationally accepted standard lists of the Nuclear Suppliers Group and the Missile Technology Control Regime.

The spokesperson said the division will be manned by representatives of all concerned ministries, organizations responsible for implementation and enforcement of export controls including Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Strategic Plans Division, Ministry of Commerce, Central Board Revenues and others as required.

The spokesperson pointed out that adoption of export control act, notification of national control list and establishment of strategic export control division are continuing manifestation of Pakistan's strong commitment to non-proliferation and its determination to fulfill its national and international control demands.

Replying to a question, Tasnim Aslam said Pakistan is engaged in talks with members of the nuclear suppliers groups to seek their cooperation in overcoming the growing power requirements of its economy.

She said Pakistan needs nuclear power plants and it is ready to allay fears, if any.

Export of items on the Control List from Pakistan will only be possible after approval by the SECDIV, she said.
