The ambassador is leading an EU delegation to the first Pakistan-EU Workshop on Export Controls.

Pakistan had put in place a multi-layered legislative and administrative export control regime consistent with international standards, a Foreign Ministry statement quoted Mr Kasuri as saying.

The foreign minister stressed that the Workshop was being held as part of Pakistan's bilateral and multi-lateral cooperation in the area of global WMD non-proliferation in which Pakistan was a partner.

The foreign minister stated that this process of interaction should facilitate cooperation with the EU in dual use technology, including meeting Pakistan's nuclear power generation needs under safeguard.

This would be consistently updated taking into account best practices of the developed countries, including of the European Union and all its members.

Pakistan's inter-departmental team is being led by Additional Secretary (UN&EC) Tariq Osman Hyder in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A bassador Giannella appreciated the proceedings of the Export Controls Workshop, which would last for two days and which would cover exploration of further avenues of cooperation between Pakistan and the European Union, the statement said.

The workshop was a manifestation of the European Union desire to engage in a forward looking manner with Pakistan in this important field, it said.
