Nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan is unwell and needs 24-hour medical care, his sister said on Wednesday, dismissing official claims he had recovered from cancer surgery.

According to The News, Razia Hussain Khan appealed to the authorities to let her elder brother to live with his family in Karachi. Dr AQ Khan has been kept under virtual house arrest in his house in Islamabad since 2004.

"I have just spoken to him about two hours back. He is not well," his sister said.

"He complained of pain in his ear and toothache."

She said her brother needed a doctor to attend to him round the clock so that if he had any problem he would be attended to immediately.

Dr AQ Khan's wife complained last month that he was suffering from blood clots in his leg but his doctors said it was a minor complication.

"Our appeal is that he should be shifted to Karachi to be with his family," the sister said.

"When he was with me in Karachi (after surgery) he was very happy and healthy," she added.

"I have not met him since he left Karachi. I only talk to him by telephone," she said.

They can keep him under whatever security they want but at least close family members and family friends should be allowed to see him, said Dr AQ Khan's sister.
