As part of promotion of peaceful purposes of atomic energy, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) wants Pakistan to take the initiative in developing nuclear data base for the power reactors and contribute to IAEA's information base.
Since Pakistan has nuclear power reactors and will be acquiring six more from China in the near future, 'it is important that Pakistan takes initiative to evolve its nuclear data to keep at par with its neighbor India and thus contribute it to the world body website', Dr Alan Nichols, head of the Nuclear Data Section, IAEA told PTI on the sidelines of the a two-day meeting on 'Atomic and Nuclear Data for Next Generation Medicine and Technologies' organized by the UNESCO peace chair at Manipal Academy of Higher Education in Karnataka state.
IAEA also wants Russia, China and Europe to improve their compilation and evaluation work on nuclear data.
"China and Russia should be encouraged to do more. Although China established its Nuclear Data Base Center in 1975, data collection is disappointing and now with several power reactors being built in China, it is for their own benefit and for the future generation, the process should be increased," Nichols said.
"In fact, we are putting pressure on China," he said.
The amount of input from Russia and Europe is disappointing as they do lot of measurement but not compilation and evaluation which is very crucial for improving the design and performance of the power reactors on a continuous basis," he said.
About 60 to 80 N-data base activities are conducted and controlled in US and 'IAEA wanted the Asian and European countries should take a large share on this activities as the nuclear power program in the region is increasing'.
Of course, India which has been a sleeping tiger with now a variety of reactors on its land, is beginning to contribute for the last two years very actively and 'we hope India establishes its N-data base center for not only for power reactors and also on their nuclear medicine, agriculture, and food processing and clean water projects so that it would have a real global contribution for peaceful purposes of atomic energy', he said.
The two-day meeting was attended by senior scientists from Bhabha Atomic Energy agency, MAHE's pro-chancellor and acting vice-chancellor Dr H S Bhallal, Registrar Dr Vinod Bhat and pro-vice chancellor of the Manipal Institute of Technology, Brig Dr S S Pabla and other faculty members working on radiation biology and Radiation medicine.
