A bomb blast in the Pakistani northwestern city of Peshawar killed one person and injured 15 others, a senior police officer said.
The device was fixed with a motorcycle which exploded at the busiest Kheyber bazaar around 5:20 pm, Senior Superintendent Police Syed Wazir said.
He said six persons were injured and one of them later died in hospital, Wazir said.
Kheyber bazaar is the busiest place in Peshawar, the capital of North-West Frontier Province. Several banks are located in the area.
The police officer said that most of the injured were Afghan refugees, who were running small businesses in the area.
The injured were taken to the nearby Lady Reading Hospital. The blast also damaged several cars parked in the area.
An eyewitness, Mazhar ul-Haq, said that people started running in panic after the blast.
Haq said he saw an ambulance take six injured away from the blast site. He said the people also took the injured into their private cars.
The police blocked roads to the blast site and started searching buildings and vehicles whose occupants said they had received threats.
The American consulate in Peshawar was closed temporarily on Monday due to security concerns.
Police officer Syed wazir said the police had received information about the possible terrorist acts in the city but the bomb site was not an area of attention for the police due to its being a public place.
"The police had been on red alert since Monday and we had taken additional security measures for the US consulate, government buildings and foreign NGOs as well as foreign business centers," he said.
He said there was a strong possibility the terrorists wanted to take the bomb to other areas but it exploded before it reached its real target.
"It was a terrorist act to target the innocent people," Police Inspector General Rifat Pasha said.
