Supporters of the Taliban in Pakistan have taken control of most of North and South Waziristan, enforcing strict social edicts such as a ban on the sale of music and films, shaving of beards in tribal agencies, a local newspaper reported here on Wednesday.

`Daily Times' reported that militants collect taxes from passing vehicles at new checkpoints and established an Islamic court in Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan, last week.

The government of Pakistan has deployed around 80,000 troops in the Pak-Afghan border to rein in militants and check cross-border movements.

Law enforcement agencies have launched a campaign to flush out militants and what they call terrorists as well as foreign miscreants from tribal areas.

Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Sherpao told the Senate while winding up a two-day debate on the situation in Waziristan that a government writ would be issued and no one would be allowed to run a parallel system.

During more than two years of operations, hundreds of militants have been killed and scores of others arrested.

The minister said that a large number of foreign terrorists and miscreants have crossed into Pakistan from Afghanistan and have been indulging in terror acts.
