Pakistani Security Forces Blow Up Suspected Militant Hideout

15 March 2006

Pakistani officials say security forces have blown up an Islamic school suspected to be a militant base in the conflict-ridden North Waziristan region.

Troops used explosives Wednesday to destroy the school in Miran Shah, the region's main town, near the border with Afghanistan.

Officials say no one was inside the building when it was demolished.

Fighting between Pakistani security forces and tribesman linked to the Taleban has left more than 150 militants and five soldiers dead this month.

The clashes were triggered by a raid by paramilitary forces to flush out foreign al-Qaida and Taleban militants hiding with sympathetic locals.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
