Pakistani Soldiers Kill 25 Militants in Clashes in North Waziristan

04 March 2006

Pakistani paramilitary soldiers have clashed again with Islamic militants in tribal North Waziristan, killing more than 25 militants. Three soldiers were also killed.

Pakistani officials say the fighting erupted after the militants seized a government building and attacked others in the region's main town, Miran Shah, where more than 40 rebels were killed in an army raid earlier this week.

Military spokesman Shaukat Sultan told reporters militant leader Maulavi Abdul Khaleq had been planning to avenge the earlier raid for the past three days. Saturday the militant leader's men started firing rockets at security positions in Miran Shah from different directions and the forces responded by using artillery fire and called in helicopter gunships for help.

Reports from the region say hundreds of terrified residents fled the town bordering Afghanistan before the fighting started.
