Pakistan-Musharraf
Pakistan's President General Pervez Musharraf has said that no radical can ever take over the country.
According to the Geo, a private television channel on Monday, during an interview President Musharraf expressed his firm belief that no radical could ever assume power in Pakistan.
He said that military operations launched against militants have been a success and the backbone of extremist organizations have also been broken.
As many as 6,00 militants have been arrested while the rest are on the run due to concerted government policies targeting them, he maintained.
Pakistan has banned a number of extremist groups, seized their records and took into custody many of their leaders and activists in the last five years or so.
Reports had emerged following the fall of the Taliban regime that their supporters as well as remnants of Al-Qaeda had taken refuge in Pakistan's tribal belt, close to the Pak-Afghan border.
As a consequence, Pakistan unleashed a string of military actions to flush out the terrorists, many of whom are now behind bars. Hundreds of them have also been killed in the action.
A report said that over 250 personnel of the security apparatus also lost their lives.
Pakistan has deployed around 80,000 security forces along its porous border with Afghanistan to ensure no wanted element crosses the border.
President Musharraf pointed out that the popularity of militant groups also witnessed a significant plunge in the recently held elections for local bodies.
