Pakistan and India on Wednesday opened another crossing in their disputed Kashmir region to exchange aid for survivors of the devastating October 8 earthquake, but did not allow any Kashmiri to cross over.

The opening of Chakothi-Uri crossing has been the second since the two countries agreed last month to open five crossings along the Line of Control (LoC), which divides the two countries in Kashmir.

Kashmiris on both sides of the LoC are angry at the delay to allow them crossing. But the two countries say they will allow civilian exchanges, after the residents get proper entry documents.

It is hoped that first of the civilians are likely to cross on November 14.

Civilian exchanges were delayed because the two sides want to scrutinize lists of those wanted to cross over and India fears militants may take advantage to slip into its part of Kashmir.

Army and civilian officials from the two sides on Wednesday exchanged bags of rice from the Indian side, and blankets and clothing from the Pakistani side.

"This is a step in the right direction," said Lt. Col. Chiragh, Pakistani army commander in the area told reporters.

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake that badly hit parts in Pakistan- administered Kashmir brought the two nuclear rivals closer and agreed on October 30 to open five crossing points.

The two countries opened the Rawalakot-Punch crossing on Monday, and the exchange marred by firing in the air and use of tear gas by police to disperse angry Kashmiris on the Pakistani side, who were protesting against now allowing the people to cross over.

Some of the protestors tried to cross to the Indian side of Kashmir.

The two countries will open three more crossing points in days to come.

The third crossing at Tata-pani and Tetwal is likely to be opened on November 10 (Thursday).
