Earthquake kills 18,000: Shaukat Sultan

Major General Shaukat Sultan Director General of talking to PTV on Sunday said that according to the information received so for from across the country about 41,188 people were injured.
He added that most of the casualties occurred in AJK followed by NWFP and Punjab. He said there are many areas where authorities were not able to reach.
The death toll of 18,000 could increase further, he added.
ISPR DG said about 215 armymen were also martyred out of whom six were officers. He said about 414 armymen were also injured in the quake.
To a question he said rain affected the relief operation since it is being carried out by helicopters.
It is government's focus to provide tents, food and medicines to the affected people as soon as possible through helicopters, he added.
He said that it is also under consideration to set up medical camps on the sites. However, he said seriously injured will be shifted to Rawalpindi.
"Efforts are underway to reopen Muzaffarabad-Rawalpindi road so that relief goods could also be dispatched through roads," he added.
