Violence grip Pakistan tribal region

Islamabad, Sept 29,IRNA -- Violence gripped Pakistan tribal region on Thursday as unidentified gunmen shot dead five militiamen and one officer and security forces exchanged fire with supporters of a religious leader.

Four militiamen and their officer were killed when they were traveling in a private vehicle in South Waziristan tribal region.

According to sources, the officials were on their way to Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan, when they came under attack.

Attackers managed to flee from the scene. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile Security forces engaged in operations against miscreants at two different places in North Waziristan tribal region.

Two security men were reported injured in miscreants firing in the area.

Security forces launched a major operation Thursday morning with helicopters support after getting reports about presence of miscreants at Khatai Dattakhel and Qutubkhel areas in North Waziristan, official sources said.

Helicopters pounded positions of miscreants in the drive, while miscreants have injured two security personnel in firing.

Residents of the area started evacuation after security forces advised them to leave the area for their safety.

Tribal elders were also accompanied with the political administration officials in the operation.

Reports said that Ahmed Haqqani, nephew of a former Taliban minister, Maulana Jalauddin Haqqani, was arrested during the operation.

Latest reports suggest that the security forces traded fire with the supporters of a local religious leader Maulana Sadiq Noor in North Waziristan.
