Islamabad, Sept 19, IRNA
Pakistan-Nuclear
Pakistan on Monday sought support from U.S and other Western nations in the use of nuclear technology for civilian purposes, saying they should respond to Pakistan's expanding requirements in energy sector.

Pakistan should be provided with the same kind of treatment as is provided to India, Foreign Office Spokesman, Muhammad Naeem Khan said in his weekly press briefing.

Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state and will have to keep minimum nuclear deterrence for her security, the spokesman said.

Asked to comment on the US nuclear doctrine, the spokesman said any doctrine that allows use of nuclear weapons for pre-emption would create deep concern and anxiety in the international community.

"Pakistan itself is a nuclear weapon state and would maintain minimum credible deterrence which is indispensable to our security," he said, adding, "Pakistan is against use of nuclear weapons." To a question, he said Pakistan expects that the western countries especially the United States will respond to our expanding requirements in the energy sector and cooperate in the use of nuclear technology for civilian purposes.

He said Pakistan would not like to expect discriminated treatment in this regard.
