An army man, accused of masterminding failed attacks on Pakistan's President General Musharraf, was hanged early Saturday in a prison, jail sources said.

Abdul Salam Siddiqi was sent to gallows in central jail Multan, a major town in Punjab at 4 a.m. His father Karim Bakhsh and other relatives came to Multan to collect the body, the sources said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Abdul Salam was one of the main suspects accused of conspiring suicide attack on President Musharraf on December 14, 2003, in Rawalpindi on a bridge near the army headquarters.

General Musharraf escaped unhurt in the attack when his car was passing on the bridge. He also survived twin suicide attacks in December but more than ten people, mostly, police and civilians were killed in the second attack.

According to the sources, Abdul Salam was handed down death sentence by a military court.

His mercy petition was rejected by President Musharraf, who is also the Chief of Army Staff, they said.

Abdul Salam was shifted to Multan jail from Sialkot, a main city in Punjab a month ago.

Relatives met Abdul Salam for the last time in Multan jail on Friday, the sources said, while senior army officers were present on the occasion of execution.

Abdul Salam's father said his son disappeared two years ago after he was transferred to Peshawar.

Abdul Salam, 35, is survived by two sons and one daughter, who are in the age of 4 to 10 years.

It is not clear as to how many people have been arrested and awarded sentence in President Musharraf's attack cases.
