Pakistan's President General Pervez Musharraf says that the successful test of cruise missile is a "major milestone" in the country's quest for strengthening and consolidating minimum deterrence, it was officially announced.

Addressing the Corps Commanders Conference in Rawalpindi on Saturday he said, the test of cruise missile was a great boost in Pakistan's defence capability and a gift to the nation on the eve of Independence Day.

"The test of our first cruise missile also manifests our resolve to maintain the balance of power so essential towards stability and peace in the region."
Pakistan fired its maiden cruise missile Babur Hataf-VII on Thursday, which is capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads with a range of 500 kilometers.

"It is a terrain hugging missile, which has the most advanced and modern navigation and guidance and a high degree of maneuverability and its technology enables it to avoid radar detection and penetrate undetected through any hostile defence system," the Army said.

Pakistan has a wide range of ballistic missiles in its arsenal which are developed in competition with India through decades of tension between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

However, both are currently engaged in talks to resolve their differences through peaceful means under the peace process.
