Pak-India nuclear hot-line to be upgraded

Islamabad, Aug 10, IRNA
Pakistan-India
Pakistan and India will upgrade the nuclear hotline further to top political level of heads of two governments and their top diplomats.

The Nation newspaper reported in its Wednesday issue that the hotline at the top official level in foreign ministries is meant to reduce the risk of a nuclear accident, which could occur due to misunderstandings.

It added that both sides were also likely to take another step forward and establish the hotline at the topmost government level of heads of governments.

The South Asian nuclear states already had agreed to set up the hotline at the foreign secretaries level at the end of their two-day of talks on nuclear confidence building measures in New Delhi last week.

They also agreed to formalize the memorandum of understanding on pre-notification of missile tests.

The hotline link between the two countries' top level would be similar to the one between the United States and the erstwhile Soviet Union, the daily said.

The development is part of the on-going peace process between the two archrivals, started early last year to resolve all the bilateral outstanding issues, including Kashmir problem.
