Pakistan for probe into US envoy's murder plot

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, June 20, IRNA
Pakistan-Afghanistan
Pakistan on Monday called for probe into reports that Afghan security forces have arrested three Pakistanis for allegedly planning to assassinate the US ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad.

"We are confident that the Afghan government will thoroughly investigate such incidents," Foreign Office spokesman Jalil Abbas Jilani said.

An Afghan official has been quoted as saying that the Pakistanis, who were suspected of being linked to a Pakistani religious militant group, were arrested in the eastern province of Laghman on Saturday, the day before Khalilzad made a visit there.

"We condemn all acts of terrorism, Jilani said, when his attention was drawn to report of Khalilzad's alleged murder plot.

The Afghan official said the three men were caught in the Laghman's Charkhakan district with two AK-47 rifles and a
rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

Khalilzad, who is due to take up a new post as ambassador to Iraq, visited Laghman to inaugurate a new military unit.

Earlier the spokesman in his weekly press briefing while commenting on Khalilzad's statement about presence of Mulla Omar and Osama bin Laden in Pakistan said that there was contradiction in statements on the US side.

"On the one side Pakistan's credentials as frontline state in war on terrorism has been acknowledged worldwide as well as at the highest level from the US administration while on other side the
representatives of the US government are talking in different way," Jilani said.
