The work on Chashma-II nuclear power plant in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province will start by year-end, a local publication wrote on Tuesday.

China would start work on the project of 300 megawatt Chashma Nuclear power plant phase 2 as part of Pak-China cooperation in energy sector, Daily Times reported.

Already China has helped Pakistan build a nuclear power plant in Punjab while the first nuclear plant was constructed by the assistance of a western country in Karachi in the 1970s.

The second phase of the project would be completed within six years.

Reports said that the project would be the part of preferential buyers credit of US dollar 500 million to be provided by the Chinese government for investment through the Chinese companies.

General Manager of China National Nuclear Corporation Kang Rixin told a news conference on Monday that the two countries have been successfully carrying out cooperation in power generation.

He said that China nuclear energy cooperation with its foreign counterparts was being carried out under safeguards put in place by the UN International Atomic Energy Agency.
