Alliance of Pakistan's major Islamic groups on Thursday condemned supply of nuclear centrifuges to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and described the step as attack on the country's nuclear program.
"This is very unfortunate and a dangerous step. We condemn it in strongest term," central leader of Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal, senator Prof. Khurshid Ahmed said in his reaction to a report that Pakistan has sent centrifuges to the IAEA.
"The government had made a public commitment that any
investigation into the alleged nuclear transfer would be in the country and will be conducted only by Pakistan itself and that no foreign institution would be involved," said Khurshid, who is also the deputy chief of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan.
He claimed that despite public commitment, the government has back tracked. "The government has put at stake sovereignty and safety of nuclear program at risk. Every patriot Pakistani condemns this decision."
"It is second attack on our nuclear program. The first attack was made when founder of the nuclear program Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan was put under house arrest and was insulted," Senator Khurshid said.
He demanded of the Parliament to debate the issue to make the government legally bound that it will not allow any intervention or probe into the country's nuclear program from any foreign agency or government.
Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Jalil Abbas Jilani said on Thursday that sending centrifuges to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would not have any negative impact on the country's national security.
