Tribesmen in Pakistan Kheyber Agency, close to Afghan border, on Thursday voluntarily surrendered a large quantity of heavy weapons to the local authorities, reports said.
Surrender of the heavy weapons in Jamrud area is part of government campaign to clear the tribal region from heavy weapons.
The arms surrendered include a large number of multi barrel rocket launchers (MRBL), anti-tank and anti-aircraft guns, heavy machine guns, and a large number of shells of different categories.
The government has offered to pay money in return for the surrendered weapons, local correspondents reported.
The Northwest Frontier Province government where the tribal areas are located, had issued orders to the authorities in seven tribal regions to initiate serious efforts and make their jurisdictions as heavy-weapon free area.
The political authorities of tribal agencies bordering Afghanistan have initiated steps in this order. In this connection, the political officers convened a number of traditional tribal jirgas (council) with all the representatives and tribal leaders.
The government has also banned carrying arms in markets and on roads of the tribal areas.
