Pakistan not under IAEA investigation

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, March 28, IRNA
Pakistan-IAEA
Pakistan said on Monday that it is not under investigation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

"The agency had sought cooperation of a number of countries, including Pakistan, and Pakistan and all other countries are cooperating," Foreign Office spokesman Jalil Abbas Jilani said at a weekly press briefing.

Iran also asked all concerned to cooperate so that there is closure of the contamination issue, Jilani said.

Responding to questions about centrifuges, the spokesman said Pakistan is considering to send some of the discarded parts of the centrifuges to the IAEA.

About the acquisition of F-16s from the United States, Jilani said the aircraft is a tested one and would fortify the capabilities of the Air Force.

He said the deal shows the positive trend in Pakistan-US relations. He said Pakistan is aware of its defense requirements and defense is in safe hands.

The spokesman said Pakistan will not accept the Line of Control (LoC), which divides Pakistan and India in the disputed Kashmir region, as an international boundary with India.

"The LoC is a problem and it cannot be a solution," he said.

He expressed Pakistan's concern over human rights violations in Kashmir and called for withdrawal of Indian troops from the held-territory.

About Siachin dispute, he said Pakistan wants implementation of the agreement signed between the defense secretaries of the two countries in June 1998 envisaging unconditional withdrawal of troops from Siachin heights.

The spokesman said Kashmiri Hurriyat leadership was consulted about the start of Muzaffarabad-Srinagar bus service and they endorsed the decision.

To a question, he said a parliamentary delegation led by the ruling Muslim League President Ch. Shujaat Hussain is visiting India at the invitation of the Indian leadership.

He clarified that Ch. Shujaat is not carrying any message and it is only a goodwill visit. He said the visit is in line with the policy of promoting interaction between the politicians of the two countries.

It will help further improve the situation.

To another question, the spokesman said Pakistan wants an early convening of the SAARC summit. He said Islamabad had proposed holding of the summit in mid-April but response of the member states is still awaited.

Replying to yet another question, he said the SAFTA process is moving forward. The committee of experts is holding a number of meetings and most of the issues related to SAFTA have been sorted out.
