Pakistani prime minister stresses Iran right to use peaceful nuclear technology

Tehran, Feb 22, IRNA -- Pakistani prime Minister stressed here Tuesday n Iran`s legitimate right to the peaceful use of nuclear technology. Speaking at the joint gathering of Iran-Pakistan industrialists and traders held in Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Mines (ICCIM), Shaukat Aziz added Iran is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation-Treaty and a member of the International Atomic nergy Agency (IAEA) which allow Iran and other nations to the peaceful use of nuclear technology. Pakistani prime minister arrived in Tehran Tuesday on a three-day official visit. Ministers of of oil, natural resources, drug control, and the advisor for state affairs are accompanying the prime minister in the trip to Tehran. The two nations officials are slated to sign several memoranda of understanding at the conclusion of Aziz`s trip to Iran. Aziz said here Tuesday Pakistan does not intend to play a mediatory role for Iran regarding its nuclear issue. Talking to reporters, Aziz added Pakistan, as a friendly country of Iran, seeks expansion of relations and cooperation with the Islamic Republic. "Pakistan calls for Iran`s progress and development in a peaceful atmosphere," he said. Asked about Pakistan`s cooperation with Iran on nuclear program, the premier added Iran is a great country which enjoys sufficient capability to settle such issues by itself, stressing Pakistan will do its utmost in this regard if necessary. He cited talks on bilateral, regional and international developments as well as a project on transfer of Iran`s gas to India via Pakistan as among major topics he is going to discuss with senior Iranian officials. Regional cooperation and further promotion of ties between the two countries would be promising for the region, Aziz said, adding expansion of relations would open new horizons for consolidation of ties in various cultural, economic and investment fields. During the visit, Aziz will discuss with Iranian leaders issues regarding strengthening economic relations, including a trilateral Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project and the feasibility of importing electricity for coastal and other areas in Baluchistan province in southwestern Pakistan. 2324/1432
