Pak Army says 17 suspects arrested in tribal operation

Islamabad, Jan 15, IRNA -- Pakistan Army has said that upto 17 people were arrested when an operation was conducted in the country`s tribal region on Saturday after information was received that a foreign suspect is present in the region. The authorities had received information about the presence of a foreigner and some miscreants, Military Spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan told state PTV. Hundreds of regular and paramilitary soldiers, backed by gunship helicopters, took part in the operation in North Waziristan tribal region, local reporters said. Sultan confirmed the arrest of upto 17 people but did not say if any foreigner was among those arrested. The spokesman said that a search operation was carried out and some people were arrested, adding that the authorities have some suspicions about them. He said the arrested people are being questioned and anything about their involvement in terrorist activities will be clear after investigations are completed. Correspondents in the area reported that the troops raided a house of a tribesman in Lwara Mandi, a town close to the Afghan border. Ten gunship helicopters took part in the operation launched at 7 a.m. dropping commandoes in the area. The security forces raided the house of one tribesman Habib, who was injured in exchange of fire and was shifted to hospital in Miran Shah, the headquarters of North Waziristan. Those arrested men were shifted to undisclosed location. North Waziristan located close to South Waziristan, where the army has been engaged against al-Qaeda suspects and their local supporters.
