Pakistan takes new measures to fight terrorism: minister

Islamabad, August 5, IRNA - New measures are being taken to fight the war against international terrorism and for securing the country, Interior Minister Syed Faisal Saleh Hayyat said on Thursday. "We are taking several measures to improve law and order situation. Weekly meetings are being held in the Interior Ministry to review the situation and if there is need such meeting will be held on daily basis to assess and review the security situation in the provinces," Hayat told newsmen in Rawalpindi. To a question regarding the new visa policy Minister for Interior said it has to be made stringent for the sake of national security and law and order. "The foreigners will be issued Pakistani visas from their respective countries. If any one holding resident visa of a third country will have to apply for from that country." The Pakistani Ambassadors and High Commissioners will be responsible for ensuring that third country resident visa holders seeking Pakistani visa. The minister for interior said all those arrested foreign terrorists are being investigated by Pakistani Agencies and no foreign investigators are involved in this process. "If any foreign government wants to have counselor access to their nationals, they would have to approach the foreign office according to the international laws," he said. South Africa has sought counselor access to their two nationals arrested in Gujrat in Punjab last month after 12-hour gun battle. He said those arrested in connection with acts of terrorism and subversion are being investigated upon and there is no chance of their being handed over to any foreign country before the completion of our investigations. "We have received a huge amount of information from the arrested foreign and Pakistani terrorists and such information is shared with other countries on reciprocal basis as Pakistan is a member of international coalition fighting terrorism." The minister informed that the foreign suspects Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani has a bounty of up-to twenty-five million dollars on his head. He said there is another terrorist who has been arrested having a reward of several million dollars. To a question the Minister said in the security environments, possibility of attacks on other important personalities cannot be discounted after suicide attempt on Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz. Replying to a question about the Pak-China anti-terror exercises the Minister said the two countries have common perceptions to fight terrorism.
