Bill to punish nuclear proliferation moved in Pak assembly
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, June 8, IRNA -- In a significant development, the Pakistan government has moved a bill in the national assembly designed to punish nuclear proliferation. The move in the Lower House of Parliament on Monday would pave the way for imposing punishment on persons found guilty of nuclear or biological weapons proliferation. The draft of The Export Control on Goods, Technologies, Material and Equipment Related to Nuclear and Biological Weapons and their Delivery Systems bill is to become a law after its passage by the 342-member lower house and the 100-seat senate (upper house). The law is meant to meet Pakistan`s obligations under a resolution adopted by the UN Security Council in late April that makes it mandatory for each country to strengthen controls over sensitive materials and technologies. Any person, the draft law says, who contravenes any provision of the act or any order, rules and regulations framed thereunder, or provides false information concerning matters governed by the act to any of the agencies responsible for administering the act shall be guilty of an offense punishable on conviction by imprisonment for a term which may extend to 14 years, or with fine not exceeding five million rupees or both. In addition, on conviction the offender`s property and assets, wherever they are, shall be forfeited. MHA/TSH/2321/1432
