Pakistan army hints new operation in tribal region

Islamabad, June 4, IRNA -- Hinting a new military operation against foreign al-Qaeda suspects in a tribal region, Pakistan military said Thursday that security forces with fresh reinforcement have completed their development and established a number of additional check posts. Foreign suspects in South Waziristan tribal region, bordering Afghanistan, have declined a Pakistani proposal to register themselves with the local authorities. The tribal lashkar or army also failed to convince the foreigners to surrender or go for the registration option. "It is hoped that political process shall yield positive results, failing which security forces are ready to launch operation at short notice," a military statement said. The statement said that Thursday`s nabbing of miscreants in the nearby North Waziristan is also a result of this enhanced security. It may be mentioned here that political process in South Waziristan Agency is in final stages," it said. The statement said that paramilitary Frontier Constabulary (FC) killed a foreign miscreant, five arrested in North Waziristan in two separate incidents on Thursday. "Out of those apprehended three have been identified as foreign nationals, while two are Pakistani drivers". Reportedly at 11:30 am Thursday a Hiace van on road approached an FC Check post where they were stopped for routine check. A passenger in the van, who was later identified as a foreign miscreant, lobbed a grenade at the troops. The FC troops responded and shop him down at the spot. The driver, a Pakistani national with the van has been apprehended. In another incident a civil car with three Burqa clad passengers approached FC check post. During the search the FC Jawans got suspicious, and in detailed search those in Burka were found to be fully armed men and were apprehended. Five grenades and five machine guns were recovered from their possession. Two FC troops were also injured during encounter with miscreants, the statement said. TSH/1430/1423
