14 years jail term for N-proliferation in Pakistan

Islamabad, May 6, IRNA - Pakistan has approved a draft bill to prevent the proliferation of nuclear and biological technology, material weapons and their delivery system. Federal Cabinet on Wednesday approved a draft bill to control the export of technologies and materials relating to nuclear, biological, chemical weapons and their means of delivery. According to local media, anyone involved in the proliferation of nuclear and biological technology and the transfer of their delivery systems would, on conviction, face 14 years in jail or Rs. five million fine or both. The property and assets of the convict would also be confiscated. The bill would be presented to the parliament for approval, after which it would become a law called the Nuclear and Biological and their Delivery System Act. Analysts said that the decision was part of the government strategy to put in place stringent control mechanism. It was made in the wake of recent charges of nuclear proliferation on some Pakistani scientists. "The draft bill manifests Pakistan`s strong commitment to the prevention of proliferation of nuclear and biological weapons and missile capable of delivering of such weapons," an official statement said. The UN Security Council recently has adopted a non-proliferation resolution mandating all countries to strengthen world to put in place and implement comprehensive legislation to strengthen controls on the export, re-export, transshipment and transit of goods and technologies, material and equipment related to nuclear and biological weapons and missiles capable of delivering such weapons.
