Key reshuffle in Pak Army this year - report
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, April 20, IRNA -- Notwithstanding whether or not President General Pervez Musharraf will quit as army chief, the Pakistan army will get two full generals, five lieutenant generals with dozens of promotions this year, a local publication wrote Tuesday. According to The News daily, fresh postings and transfers of officers would also be made in the last quarter of this year. Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Mohammad Aziz Khan and Vice-Chief of Army Staff General Mohammad Yusuf would be completing their term on October 7 - the deadline for President Musharraf to select two new generals for the army, the daily said. The newspaper reported that General Musharraf`s final decision on his status as the chief of army staff is also likely to be made public on or before that date. Under an agreement, he is bound to doff his uniform by December 31. However, he has said that before taking a decision, he would have to take into considerations many factors. Between now and December, five other lieutenant generals would be due for retirement, hence, there would be appointments of a few new corps commanders and principal staff officers at the General Headquarters (GHQs). Down the ladder, several new general officer commanding and brigade commanders would be replaced with the newly promoted general officers and brigades. Quoting a senior official, the daily said that transition is usually very smooth in the army, but the one that would be taking place later this year would be "large and meaningful". Some unconfirmed reports have also said recently that the president might promote himself to be the field marshall. MHA/TSH/216 End
