Pakistan favors peaceful use of N-technology: Kasuri

Islamabad, April 12, IRNA -- Pakistan`s Foreign Minister Khurshid 
Mehmoo Kasuri said on Monday his country looks forward to increasing 
technical cooperation among member countries of the Regional 
Cooperation Agreement (RCA) for the promotion of peaceful use of 
nuclear technology for socio-economic development. 
He was inaugurating the 26th meeting of the Regional Cooperation 
Agreement on peaceful use of nuclear technology in Asia and the 
Pacific in Islamabad on Monday (today). 
RCA is an inter-governmental agreement for East Asia and the 
Pacific region under the auspices of the IAEA. 
Under the agreement, the government parties undertake in 
cooperation with each other and with the IAEA to promote and 
coordinate cooperative research, development (R&D) and training 
projects in nuclear science and technology through their appropriate 
national institutions. 
"Pakistan is ready to share its successful experiences with other 
countries in peaceful application of nuclear technology as it has 
achieved significant progress in the fields of agriculture, food, 
health, industry, quality assurance and research reactor utilization,"
Kasuri said. 
The official further said that Pakistan has gained substantially 
from the activities of RCA in the peaceful application of nuclear 
technology in various fields which, he said, are benefiting the 
people in these areas. 
Kasuri appreciated the activities of RCA in the region which 
include initiating the idea of sharing of each other`s knowhow in 
areas of importance to their development. 
"Pakistan has also a strong interest in sharing its experiences 
in other fields like non-destructive testing and industrial 
radiography in which we have also acquired experience and expertise 
for the benefit of the member states," Kasuri added. 
There are 17 RCA member states, which include Australia, 
Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia Republic of Korea, Japan, 
Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, 
Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. 
In his welcome address, a member of the Pakistan Atomic Energy 
Commission, Masud Ahmed, highlighted the development activities of 
the commission in various fields. 
He said the commission has introduced various technologies in the 
food, agriculture, health, industry, medicine and power generation 
fields which are benefiting the masses. 
The Regional Cooperative Agreement is playing an active role in 
promoting cooperation among the 17 member countries of Asia and the 
Pacific in the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology. 
Thirty-six delegates from member countries are participating in 
the 26th meeting of the RCA. This is second time that the annual 
meeting is being held in Pakistan.
