Pak Army setting up air base in Wana
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, April 12, IRNA -- The Pakistan Army is establishing a military air base in South Waziristan`s Wana area as part of operations to take on Al-Qaeda and Taliban elements. Sources told IRNA in Peshawar that the base is being set up close to the Pak-Afghan border as military experts and engineers are busy in the air. "The decision to this effect was taken after successful helicopter-assisted operation during the recent anti-terror campaign in the area to flush out terrorists," the sources pointed out. The army units with their equipment are pouring in for what local reporters said was another operation in the tribal belt to deal with remnants of Al-Qaeda and Taliban suspects. President General Pervez Musharraf said last month that some 500-600 foreign terrorists and their harborers are hiding in the tribal areas. Reports also said that some terrorists had fled to the Shawwal area of North Waziristan Agency, where an operation is reportedly in the offing and army units are arriving in the Miranshah locality.
