Pak, US officials hold talks on arms control

Islamabad, Feb 20, IRNA -- Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State 
for Arms Control Stephen Rademaker held talks on strategic stability 
with Pakistani officials in Islamabad on Friday, Pakistan`s Foreign 
Office said. 
"These discussions are part of broad on-going dialogue on 
strategic and security issues, including regional security," an FO 
statement said. 
The discussions are part of a multi-faceted bilateral relationship
and further demonstrate the US commitment to a strong, cooperative 
long-term relationship with Pakistan, the US official was quoted 
saying in a meeting with Pakistan`s Additional Secretary (UN) Tariq 
Osman Hyder. 
Hyder reiterated the importance for Pakistan of this bilateral 
relationship with the US, the statement added. "The two sides 
discussed recent global developments in arms control." 
According to the Foreign Office, Rademaker conveyed US views that 
in certain circumstances missile defense could contribute to regional 
stability and the US was ready to further discuss this issues with 
Pakistan. 
"Both sides agreed to continue discussions on these issues." 
After the delegation level talks, the visiting official called on 
Pakistani Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar and briefed him on US 
policies, the statement said. 
Khokhar briefed his guest about recently concluded talks with the 
Indian foreign secretary and the agreement between the two countries 
to hold expert level talks on nuclear CBMs. 
At the end of talks between the foreign secretaries of Pakistan 
and India, Khokhar told a news conference in Islamabad that the two 
foreign secretaries would meet in May or June next for talks on peace 
and security including confidence building measures (CBMs) and Jammu 
and Kashmir. 
"Expert-level talks on nuclear CBMs have been proposed in the 
latter half of May." 
He said talks about this issue would be held at experts-level but 
they did not go into substance as the experts would submit their 
report to the foreign secretaries.
