Pakistan, India discuss security, WMD issues

Islamabad, Feb 9, IRNA - Pakistan and India have discussed security-related issues and the efforts to halt spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), press reports said Monday. Both sides discussed these issues during a meeting between Pakistan`s Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri and India`s National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra at the close of a security conference in Munich Sunday. Pledging to continue work for nuclear non-proliferation, Islamabad and New Delhi reiterated their stance not to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT). Mishra was in Pakistan, prior to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit last month in Islamabad. Some reports said he held talks with top officials of Pakistani security agencies. However, neither side disclosed details of those talks. At the end of summit and a meeting between President General Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee India and Pakistan decided to commence composite dialogue to resolve bilateral issues, including Kashmir. Islamabad and New Delhi are engaged in preparations for the dialogue, starting from February 16. The dialogue would continue for three days in Islamabad at the level of foreign secretaries. Both countries have improved relations in recent months following announcement to take a number of confidence-building measures. Pakistan and India, weary of tensions and acrimonious history, have decided to improve their relations and settle their issues through peaceful means. They have fought three wars, two over Kashmir since their independence from the British colonial rule in August 1947. Better relations between the two could trigger economic activity in the region and help build a multi-billion-gas pipeline project from Iran to India via Pakistan. The project was envisioned a decade ago, but could not be realized because of Pak-India relations. MHA/TSH/213 End
