Pakistan cabinet recommends pardon for scientist Qadeer Khan

Islamabad, Feb 5, IRNA -- Pakistan Federal Cabinet in its special meeting on Thursday asked President General Pervez Musharraf to accept top nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer`s `appeal for pardon`. "The Federal Cabinet in a special meeting held here on Thursday under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali reviewed the mercy petition of Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan referred by the National Command Authority (NCA) on February 4, and decided to forward its recommendations to the president to pardon the scientist," it was officially announced. Earlier, the National Command Authority chaired by General Musharraf decided to forward the clemency appeal to the cabinet for its consideration. In his televised confession, the father of Pakistan`s nuclear program Dr Qadeer on Wednesday admitted to nuclear proliferation and sought pardon from the government and the nation. Dr. Khan accepted the responsibility, after his meeting with President Musharraf on Wednesday. In the light of an International Atomic Energy Agency letter, Pakistan conducted `debriefing` of some of the nuclear scientists and officials. /TSH/BH/210 End
