Pak cabinet proposes pardon for top N-scientist

Islamabad, Feb 5, IRNA -- Pakistan Federal Cabinet in its special meeting on Thursday recommended to President General Pervez Musharraf to accept top nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer`s `appeal for pardon`. Earlier, the National Command Authority chaired by General Musharraf decided to forward the clemency appeal to the cabinet for its consideration. The cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, considered the appeal and requested the president to pardon Dr. Khan, state PTV reported. In his televised confession, the father of Pakistan`s nuclear program Dr Qadeer on Wednesday admitted to nuclear proliferation and sought pardon from the government and the nation. Dr. Khan accepted the responsibility, after his meeting with President Musharraf on Wednesday. In the light of an International Atomic Energy Agency letter, Pakistan conducted `debriefing` of some of the nuclear scientists and officials. MHA/TSH/AH/210 End
