Pak Islamists fear roll back of nuclear program
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Feb 5, IRNA -- The Mutahida Majlis-e Amal, a parliamentary alliance of Pakistan`s six mainstream Islamic parties, has expressed fears a conspiracy was being hatched to roll back the national nuclear program. The MMA speakers poured scorn on the ruling statesmen alleging they had given in to the United States and West`s `pressure` to prepare a ground for their intervention to deprive the country of its nuclear capability. Speaking at a rally here in Islamabad, Acting President of MMA Qazi Hussain Ahmed said that the people would not let the government compromise on the N-program to continue their rule. "Pakistan today is focus of anti-Islam forces. They want to turn the country into another Afghanistan and Iraq," he said, referring to US-led war in these two countries. About top nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan`s televised confession of transfer of nuclear technology abroad on Wednesday, the MMA leader charged that he (Dr. Qadeer) was forced to make this confession. "The next stage of this diabolic game is to ask the country to scrap its nuclear program, as the US and its allies are opposed to the nuclear capability in any Muslim country`s hands," he added. MMA has announced to observe countrywide strike on February 6 to express solidarity with the nuclear scientists, being `debriefed` for their alleged role in transfer of nuclear know-how to some other countries. The rally was primarily staged to mark the Kashmir Solidarity Day, being observed for the last several years. Hundreds of men, women and even children participated in the program. In the light of a letter by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the government of Pakistan is holding debriefing of some nuclear scientists and officials for the last two months.
