Cabinet recommends pardon for Dr Khan
ISLAMABAD, Feb 5 (APP): The Federal Cabinet on Thursday recommended to the President to pardon Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan for unauthorized proliferation activities. The Federal Cabinet in a special meeting here chaired by Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali reviewed the mercy petition of Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan referred by the National Command Authority (NCA) on February 4 and "decided to forward its recommendations to the President to pardon the Scientist." Dr A.Q Khan met the President on Wednesday and accepted full responsibility for all proliferation activities, which were conducted by him during the period in which he was at the helm of affairs at Khan Research Laboratories. Dr. Khan also submitted his mercy petition to the President and requested for clemency, in view of his services for national security. He also reconfirmed to the President the details of proliferation activities he committed in the past. Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan offered his "deepest regrets" and "unqualified apologies" to the nation for his involvement in "unauthorized" proliferation activities. The President consulted the National Command Authority which decided to forward the clemency appeal to the Federal Cabinet for final decision. The NCA, which met yesterday was attended by President General Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, Foreign Minister, Interior Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Chief of the Naval Staff, Chief of the Air Staff, Vice Chief of Army Staff and other senior civil and military officials. The cabinet also expressed its solidarity with the people of Kashmir and felt that the peace process initiated between India and Pakistan as a result of January 6 joint statement following a meeting between President General Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would lead to resolution of all outstanding disputes between Pakistan and India including the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. The Cabinet expressed its satisfaction that as a result of cease fire the Kashmiris living on both sides of LOC have observed Eid in a period of tranquility and calm and that relatives and friends living on both sides of Neelum River have exchange presents and gifts on the occasion.
