Pak N-scientist Qadeer admits proliferation
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Feb 4, IRNA -- Senior Pakistani nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan has admitted that `many of the reported activities about nuclear proliferation did occur` and that these were initiated at his behest. In a statement over the state-run PTV on Wednesday, he said in his interview with the concerned government officials, he was confronted with evidence and findings. Dr. Qadeer said he has `voluntarily admitted that much of it is true and accurate`. "It pained to realize in retrospect that my entire lifetime achievement of providing foolproof national security to the nation could have been seriously jeopardized on account of these activities." He said, "These activities relating to unauthorized proliferation were based in good faith but on error of judgment." Dr. A.Q. Khan also said that those of his subordinates who have accepted their role were acting in good faith and under his instructions. He clarified that there was never any authorization for these activities by the government. "I take full responsibility for these actions and seek pardon of the nation." Such activities will never take place in future, he assured. Dr. Khan also appealed to the Pakistani people that in supreme national interest, they should refrain from any further speculation and not to politicize `this extremely sensitive issue of national security`.
