Pak nuclear control body says no to proliferation

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Jan 31, IRNA -- Pakistan`s National Command Authority has
reiterated Islamabad`s strong commitment to international agreements
on non-proliferation saying it would never share this technology, in
whatever form, with any other country.
A special session of the Command Authority held in Rawalpindi
Saturday also condemned and distanced itself from `individual acts of
indiscretion in the past`.
The meeting was attended by President General Pervez Musharraf,
Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, foreign minister, ministers
of defense, interior and finance, chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff
Committee, chief of Naval Staff, chief of Air Staff, vice chief of
Army Staff, senior civil and military officials and chairman KRL.
The meeting was held to review the progress of the ongoing
investigation sessions in connection with allegations of nuclear
proliferation against some Pakistani scientists.
The Command Authority was given an update on the findings of the
debriefing by DG Strategic Plans Division, it was officially announced
here.
Pakistan`s nuclear capability was solely for the purpose of
deterrence of aggression against Pakistan, reports of the meeting
said.
"It fortified national security and that it would never be in the
national interest to share this technology in whatever form with any
other country."
The National Command Authority said Pakistan took its
international obligations with utmost seriousness and in this regard,
the government condemns and distances itself in categorical terms from
individual acts of indiscretion in the past.
"It expressed its complete confidence in the Command and Control
system put in place some years ago and was assured that no such
incident has taken place since its establishment in February 2000 and
there was no chance of such acts taking place in the future."
With regard to the on-going investigations, the National Command
Authority was informed that it was nearly concluded and appropriate
action will be taken against those found guilty.
The Authority dispelled fears in the strongest terms that Pakistan
would ever compromise on its nuclear capability.
"It said far from rollback or freeze, Pakistan would continue to
undertake qualitative and, if necessary, quantitative upgrades with
the objective of consolidating the national deterrence in line with
its minimum deterrence needs."
The Authority said, the nation should rest assured that the
nuclear capability, which enjoys national consensus across the
political spectrum, is in safe and professional hands and should not
be subject to political expediency.
