IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Jan 28, IRNA -- Pakistan cabinet on Wednesday approved the formation of National Security Council (NSC), which will be composed of top military and civilian leaders. The cabinet met in Islamabad Wednesday chaired by Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali and approved the NSC Bill to be tabled in the forthcoming session of the Parliament. "The bill seeks to establish a National Security Council to serve as a forum for consultations on matters of national security including the sovereignty, integrity, and defense and security of the state, crisis management, democracy, governance and inter-provincial harmony," a statement said. The bill envisages that the president of Pakistan shall be the chairman of the Council and its other members will be the prime minister, the chairman of the Senate, the speaker of the National Assembly, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, chief ministers of the provinces, the chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the chiefs of staff of the Pakistan Army, Navy and Pakistan Air Force. The placing of the draft bill follows an understanding arrived at between the government and the alliance of Islamic parties that the National Security Council be set up under an act of the Parliament. Also in order to meet the international obligations and its responsibilities to the WTO, the Pakistani cabinet approved the setting up of a Pakistan Intellectual Property Rights Organization, (PIPRO) for the overall management of the intellectual property rights in the country. It will integrate the three different intellectual property rights offices functioning now which have created difficulties in implementing the regime because of overlapping responsibilities. The PIPRO will be administrated by a Policy Board comprising representatives of the concerned ministries, according to the statement. TK/TSH/AH/210 End
